Canker in Poultry

Canker in Poultry

Trichomonosis, commonly referred to as canker, is caused by the protozoan parasite Trichomonas gallinae. This parasite lives in the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver and other organs. Contaminated water is the most likely important source of infection for chickens and turkeys. Dead tissue appears as white to yellowish areas in the mouth, crop, and esophagus that rapidly form masses blocking the esophagus. The yellowish areas in the mouth may look similar to the fungal disease sour crop. In this video Jeff Duguay, Ph.D. covers canker in poultry and how to treat it.
